What Is The Chemical?

A study has show that 4-methylimidazole (4-MEI), commonly found in fizzy drinks, produces a carcinogen that may heighten the risk of cancer

The test had found that the fizzy drinks ranged from 9.5 mcg of 4-MEI per liter, to 963 mcg per liter of 4-MEI.

A US Federal Government Study had found that the 4-MEI had caused cancer in mice, leading the International Agency for Research on Cancer to determine in 2011 that the chemical was ‘possibly’ carcinogenic to human beings.

 

Results of The Fizzy Drinks

The testing included Sprite (the control substance), variations of the coke brand, pepsi brands, and malta goya.

Researchers have concluded that the majority of the Pepsi brands during mid 2013 testing had high levels of 4-MEI in New York, while the Californian drinks had significantly less.

The Pepsi products in New York had significantly high levels of 4-MEI. Research has shown that the chemical used is 6 times above the limit of the recommended limits.

Californian drinks (where there are strict regulations for this chemical) show significantly lower levels of the chemical. Diet Pepsi has 1.5 mcg/l above the limit, and Pepsi One being 13.5 above the limit in California.

Results from the tests on Malta Goya are the worst out of all the test drinks. Researchers found the drink had 10 to 12 times more than the recommended limit.

 

The different levels of 4-MEI found in New York fizzy drinks and Californian fizzy drinks. Meaning, manufacturers of these products are capable of lowering the amount of 4-MEI in their products on their own.
